How to turn a photo into paint by numbers (3 steps)

PhotoPBN is a photo to paint by numbers converter that runs in your browser.

  1. 1

    Add a photo

Drop a JPG or PNG. HEIC works when the browser can read it.

  2. 2

    Start with the defaults

16 colours, balanced detail, and A4 portrait are ready. Colours run from 8 to 30. Detail changes the smallest numbered area.

  3. 3

    Download and print

Save a PDF with the outline and colour key, or grab a PNG or SVG.

Choosing colours and detail

Start with 16 colours. Fewer colours, down to 8, make bigger shapes and a simpler painting. More colours, up to 30, stay closer to the photo and take longer to paint.

Detail sets the smallest area that gets its own number. Lower detail is easier, including for kids and bold pictures. Higher detail keeps small parts such as eyes, petals, and lettering.

Print and paint tips

  • Print the PDF at actual size (scale 100%) on A4 or US Letter, in the orientation you chose.
  • Use the colour key to match acrylic, gouache, or craft paint. The hex code is there if you want to mix a closer colour.
  • Paint light colours first, then darker ones. A fine brush helps around the lines, and a larger brush fills the big areas.
  • Every area with the same number uses the same paint.

FAQ

Does my photo stay private?

Yes. PhotoPBN runs in your browser. Your photo is not uploaded, and we never receive it. Read the Privacy Policy for the details.

How many colours should I pick?

Start with 16. You can choose from 8 to 30. Fewer colours make larger, simpler areas. More colours follow the photo more closely and take longer to paint.

What size will it print?

Choose A4 or US Letter, in portrait or landscape. Download the PDF and print it at actual size, with scale set to 100%.

Which paints should I buy?

Acrylic, gouache, or craft paint all work. Match each numbered swatch to the closest tube you have, or mix toward the hex code on the palette key. A fine brush helps with edges and a larger brush fills big areas.

Is PhotoPBN free?

Yes. PhotoPBN is free, with no signup and no account.
